A
Passive Solar home uses the Sun's energy as the primary
source of heat within the living space. A Passive Solar
home has only one moving part: the Sun.
Passive Solar energy is clean
and quiet and you don't get a bill for it.
Passive Solar is not a
new technology, it has existed for hundreds of years,
but, advances in design strategies and the continually
rising cost of heating/cooling fuels and building
materials combine to make Passive Solar Adobe
construction cost-effective.
When properly designed,
a Passive Solar home allows the Sun in when you need it
to heat your home, it stores some of that heat in the
mass (walls and floors) and releases that heat later (at
night).
A good design
will also block the Sun's heat during the warmer Summer
months keeping your home cooler. The use of glass and
mass in correct proportion results in a solar efficient
home which requires very little additional heating.
Passive Solar Adobe
homes have many advantages: substantial savings in fuel
costs for heating and cooling, reduced noise levels from
exterior sources and decreased risk of loss due to fire
or wind damage are among these benefits.
Adobe does tend to be
slightly more expensive than some other forms of
construction, however increased energy savings over
several years can offset this expense.
If you have ever been
in an adobe home, you know that it feels like it is there
to stay. No one is going to kick these walls out.
